What guitar shoud I start with? Acoustic or Electric?
I am a 12 year old girl (turning 13 soon) who really wants to play the electric guitar. I play the violin now, but am planning to stop. I’ve also played the piano. My piano teacher says I’m a fast and good learner, if that counts for anything, and I am really interested in doing the guitar. I know that if I put my mind to it, I’ll get it done. I’ve done quite a bit of research on what to start off with, but most of the time it’s not a straight answer. I know that it’s the ELECTRIC guitar I want to play, but if it’s better, I’ll start off with the acoustic. Sometimes I could picture a guitar on a guitar stand in the corner of my room. Money is not a huge problem. I want to know the advice of some experienced people. I love listening to music with the electric guitar in it. Thanks for your time!
I have played guitar for almost 7 years, and I consider myself a competent player. I would say that you need to start on acoustic, learn your basic chords, fingering/picking skills there. I was just like you when I started, I wanted to play electric like George Harrison so bad, and I started on acoustic. It gives you a solid foundation.
Then move onto electric. Make sure to purchase quality instruments, try them out first. Evaluate and research your choices. This is an investment. Do you like thin or thick necks, do you want electronics so that you can plug in your acoustic? It is a big decision.
I would stay away from acoustics like Ovation, I personally don’t like the sound.
Good luck, and welcome to the journey of the guitar!
